“Bella?” Narcissa sobbed as she lay on her bed, curled up.
“Mhm?” she was idly flicking through a magazine on the other side of the room.
“Why did daddy say that?”
“Say what?”
“Don't you remember? He said it a few years ago...”
“Cissy, I can hardly remember yesterday never mind a few years ago.”
Narcissa sighed and turned to face the wall.
“Fine,” Bellatrix got up and went to sit by her sister. “What did he say?”
“About mummy not loving us,” Narcissa said through sobs.
Bellatrix looked at the ground, remembering the day their parents had had a massive argument and their father had gone to the pub, came back hours later, drunk out of his skull.
“He was intoxicated, Cissy,” Bellatrix stroked her sister's back. “He didn't mean it, yeah? And he apologised the next day.”
“That's not the point!” Narcissa curled even tighter into a ball.
Bellatrix remembered how their father had been purple in the face after the row, her and Narcissa had watched from the stairs. Andromeda was out visiting friends that day, she was lucky to not have the memories. It was late when he came in, but both Bella and Cissy were wide awake, they could hear their mother crying.
Bellatrix thought back to how Cissy had ran out of their bedroom as he came up the stairs.
“Daddy?” she had said.
Bellatrix had followed after her and tried to drag her back into their room; their father had had one too many drinks several nights and it always made him a hurtful man.
“What?” he had practically shouted as he stumbled up the stairs.
Narcissa had ran to give him a hug but he rejected her.
“No,” he had slurred. “Your mummy doesn't love you so why should I?”
Narcissa had cried herself to sleep that night, the first of many and all Bella had to say was that she would soon get used to it.
